Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Cavalcanti

Abstract

This study consists of a biographical review of the personality Bezerra de Menezes (1831-1900), an esteemed personality in Rio de Janeiro during the late 19th century. Born in a small village on the countryside of Ceara, he went on a journey to the brazilian imperial capital to fulfill his dream of becoming a physician. He became known for his research and innovative practices, presenting a thesis for the treatment of veneral diseases during the preantibiotic era. He was nicknamed the “Doctor of the Poor”, for his authentic demonstrations of selflessness practicing medicine in Brazil. He was also a brilliant political figure, na abolitionist of the most emeritus playing a significant role fighting the injustice commited against the african-brazilians, and working as well in education of children and Young people. Menezes is also a reference regarding spirituality, named the “Brazilian Kardec”.
